Built in 1928, Haus Madsack stands as a testament to a bygone era. It whispers stories of newspaper magnate Erich Madsack and the architect Fritz Höger. Haus Madsack is located on Walderseestraße 3 in Hanover, Germany. Initially a grand residence for Madsack, it now serves a different purpose. The building, designed by the prominent expressionist architect Höger, showcases a unique architectural style. Compared to the surrounding villas, Haus Madsack possesses a distinct quality. Höger, known for his expressionist work, designed this striking home around the same time as the Anzeiger-Hochhaus. This two-story cubical structure features a prominent overhanging tent roof. Several single-story, flat-roofed additions soften the cube’s stark geometry. Unlike the vertically oriented Anzeiger-Hochhaus, Haus Madsack emphasizes horizontal lines. Recessed mortar joints, projecting cornices, wide eaves, and dormers highlight this horizontal emphasis. Even the windows, with their horizontal muntins, contribute to the overall design. Cultural historian Peter Struck likened Haus Madsack’s design to Frank Lloyd Wright’s concept of “the poetry of interlock.” Today, the Markuskindergarten, associated with the united Evangelical Lutheran Apostle and St. Markus Church, occupies this historic building. The laughter of children now echoes within the walls, replacing the rustle of newspapers and the click of typewriter keys. Haus Madsack’s journey reflects Hanover’s evolving history, a blend of architectural brilliance and community adaptation.
