Who knew a house could hold so many secrets? Welcome to Haus Kohtz a hidden gem in Berlin’s Dahlem neighborhood. Built between 1922 and 1923 by architect Otto Kohtz for himself and his wife Agnes Kuban this house is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to a bygone era a time of elegance and artistic expression.

Haus Kohtz isn’t your average family home. Its central feature is an elliptical hall a kind of miniature temple. This wasn’t just a living space it was also a ballroom a place for music and celebrations. Imagine the sounds of chamber music filling this space the laughter of guests the clinking of glasses.

The house has undergone many changes. In 1934 Kohtz added a portico to the front and a sunroom on the east side. Notice the columns of the portico. They were once crowned with busts portraits of Kohtz his wife Agnes and family members. These sculptures were hidden under layers of mortar for decades. Only recently were they uncovered during restoration work.

Even more intriguing are the expressionist murals discovered behind the wood paneling during the 2015 renovations. These stunning works depict musicians their identities and the meaning behind the art remain a mystery. Experts in Berlin museums haven’t solved the riddle yet. It’s a tantalizing clue to the house’s past a silent story waiting to be deciphered.

Haus Kohtz fell into disuse after Kohtz’s death. It was later owned by the Technical University of Berlin. In 2012 a group of owners bought it embarking on a three-year restoration project. This extensive work not only preserved the original structure but also added a modern two-story extension. A large window spans the width of this addition allowing a clear view through to the original facade.

The history of Haus Kohtz is a beautiful story. It’s about family creativity artistic expression. And the enduring power of a home to hold memories secrets and artistry. So the next time you are in Dahlem take a moment to appreciate this architectural masterpiece. Haus Kohtz may be quiet on the outside but it’s alive with stories on the inside.
