Ever wonder about the story behind this impressive building? This is Haus der Technik. It is not just a building. It is a landmark of innovation and learning in Essen.

Haus der Technik is Germany’s oldest independent technical education institute. It has been at the forefront of engineering advancements for decades. The Haus der Technik’s story began long before this building existed. In 1909, Heinrich Reisner recognized the need for continuing education for engineers. It wasn’t until 1919 that Reisner together with Hans Luther, Franz Fischer and Wilhelm von Waldthausen founded the Gesellschaft für Wissenschaft und Leben im rheinisch-westfälischen Industriegebiet.

In 1927, the Haus der Technik finally opened in a building of the Essener Börse. Then on January 9, 1930, the supporting association Haus der Technik e. V. was founded. But the Haus der Technik wasn’t always located here. Initially, it was housed in the Sparkasse building on Rathenaustraße. The first rooms were officially opened on April 1, 1930.

However, the Haus der Technik needed more space as it grew. In 1936, the city of Essen offered a new home: the former Essen Stock Exchange building. Edmund Körner designed this building. It first opened in 1930. From 1924 to 1934, it served as the city’s stock exchange. This building became the Haus der Technik’s central location.

But the story doesn’t end there. The building faced a major challenge during World War II. On March 5, 1943, a bomb attack completely destroyed the Haus der Technik. The destruction included the library and patent office. Yet, the spirit of innovation could not be extinguished. Lectures resumed on April 24, 1946, even before the building was rebuilt.

The Haus der Technik rose from the ashes. Reconstruction took place between 1951 and 1953. During this time, an additional floor was added. The design of the arcades was modified. Today, the Haus der Technik boasts over 40 seminar rooms and conference halls. These spaces can accommodate between 10 and 570 participants. Modern conference technology is available.

The Haus der Technik continues to evolve. It partners with RWTH Aachen as a non-profit organization. Every year, it hosts around 1,500 seminars, conferences, and congresses. It also offers degree programs with partner universities such as Duisburg-Essen and Münster.

The Haus der Technik focuses on a wide range of subjects. These include engineering, energy, manufacturing and construction. Also business administration, fire protection, IT, and environmental protection are taught. The Haus der Technik remains dedicated to advancing technology and knowledge.

Notably, a bronze sculpture of founder Heinrich Reisner once sat on the Heinrich-Reisner-Platz. Created by Jürgen Ebert, it depicted Reisner sitting on a bench. Sadly, repeated vandalism led to its removal in 2018.

The Haus der Technik stands as a symbol. It represents Essen’s commitment to education. It shows the city’s dedication to technological progress. This building has witnessed history. It has survived destruction. It has emerged stronger. The Haus der Technik continues to shape the future. It provides education and drives innovation.
