Nine religions. One building. This is the Haus der Religionen – Zentrum für interreligiöse und interkulturelle Bildung in Hannover. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to dialogue and understanding. The Haus der Religionen, housed in the former Athanasiuskirche, opened its doors during the 2005 Kirchentag. It’s a unique space where nine diverse religions – Alevatism, Baha’i, Buddhism, Christianity, Ezidism, Hinduism, Humanism, Islam, and Judaism – coexist and collaborate. Imagine representatives from each of these faiths gathering within these walls. They come together to discuss, learn, and foster mutual respect. The Haus der Religionen is not just a meeting place for religious leaders. It’s an educational center, a venue for interfaith events, and a place where people from all walks of life can explore different belief systems. A multimedia exhibition introduces visitors to the nine religions, highlighting their history, practices, and beliefs. This exhibition is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday. In 2022, after extensive renovations, the Haus der Religionen was re-inaugurated by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This marked a “new era” for the center, according to Wolfgang Reinbold, the chairman. The Haus der Religionen is a vibrant hub. It hosts workshops, seminars, and conferences. It offers training programs for professionals in various fields, promoting interreligious understanding in education, social work, healthcare, and more.
