“A courtyard stage with space for only 100 people.” That’s how visitBerlin.de describes HAU3. Welcome to a hidden gem of Berlin’s theatre scene. HAU3 is one of the three stages of Hebbel am Ufer. This theatre group is known for contemporary dance, theatre, and performance.

Let’s delve into what makes HAU3 special. Hebbel am Ufer has a rich history. Nele Hertling transformed the Hebbel-Theater into an internationally renowned venue from 1989 to 2003. Matthias Lilienthal won the Federal Republic of Germany’s Design Prize in 2007. Annemie Vanackere has been the artistic director since 2012. She seeks artistic expression reflecting current social and political issues. The group does not have its own ensemble. Instead, it invites theatre groups to perform ambitious productions.

HAU1 is located in the former Hebbel-Theater in Kreuzberg. It showcases Art Nouveau style. This building remarkably survived World War II without major damage. HAU2 once hosted legendary productions of the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer. Later, it became a main venue for independent theatre groups in Berlin.

HAU3 offers a more intimate experience. It is the smallest of the three theatres. Only 100 people can fit into this courtyard stage. In the 1990s, Andrej Woron’s Teatr Kreatur from Poland performed here. This small venue has seen innovative performances. It continues to be a place for experimental theatre.

Hebbel am Ufer has been voted theatre of the year twice by “Theater heute”. This reflects its importance in Berlin’s cultural landscape. The three venues are close to each other. They create a hub for performing arts.

HAU3 stands as a testament to Berlin’s vibrant arts scene. It is a place where creativity thrives. It is a space where artists and audiences connect. Next time you are in Berlin, consider experiencing a performance here at HAU3. You might discover the next big thing in theatre.
