What if I told you a pirate’s treasure lies beneath Hauptkirche St. Katharinen? This is one of Hamburg’s five principal Lutheran churches. Hauptkirche St. Katharinen stands as a testament to Hamburg’s rich history. Its story begins in the 13th century.

Official records mention Hauptkirche St. Katharinen’s three naves as early as 1256. It was built on 1100 larch tree trunks. They were driven into the soil. This brick church sits close to the port, Speicherstadt, and HafenCity. It traditionally served the seamen of Hamburg.

Over the centuries, Hauptkirche St. Katharinen has seen much. It has withstood storm surges, fires, and wars. During World War II, air raids in 1943 severely damaged the church. Only the outer walls and the base of the spire remained. The citizens of Hamburg rebuilt it. The restoration occurred between 1950 and 1957. Further renovations took place from 2007 to 2012.

The spire of Hauptkirche St. Katharinen reaches a height of 115 meters. In 1657 a Baroque rooftop was added to the spire. The copper and gold steeple is widely considered the most beautiful in the city. The baroque-style spire is made of steel with a coating of copper and some gold. On top sits the crown of Catherine. Legend says the golden crown was adorned with the treasure of the pirate Klaus Störtebeker.

Inside Hauptkirche St. Katharinen, a magnificent organ awaits. The instrument’s origins date back to the 16th century. Johann Sebastian Bach played here. He auditioned for the post of organist at the nearby Jacobikirche. He greatly admired this organ. The organ was destroyed in the Second World War. However, 520 pipes were preserved. It has been reconstructed to its former glory. The project was titled “Eine Orgel für Bach”.

Hauptkirche St. Katharinen isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s also a vibrant place. It is a popular concert venue. Organ recitals and choral concerts take place here regularly. On Tuesdays, the church hosts a weekly market. Locals sell fresh produce and baked goods.

Today, Hauptkirche St. Katharinen stands as a symbol of resilience. It shows Hamburg’s enduring spirit. From its foundations rooted in legend. To its spire reaching for the sky, Hauptkirche St. Katharinen is a treasure. It represents Hamburg’s past, present and future.
