Did you know that the Hauptgebäude of the Technische Universität Berlin has seen parliaments meet within its walls? The Technische Universität Berlin is one of Germany’s leading technical universities. It has a rich history dating back to the 18th century.

Let’s talk about this magnificent building before us. The Hauptgebäude is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of Berlin’s resilience and innovation.

The Königlich Technische Hochschule zu Berlin was established in 1879. In 1884, the new buildings of the university were inaugurated. They stood on what was then Berliner Straße. Today it is Straße des 17. Juni. The university gained the right to award doctorates in 1899. This made it the first technical university in Germany with this privilege.

After World War II, the Technische Hochschule was closed in 1945. It reopened in 1946 as the Technische Universität Berlin. This new beginning included a humanist approach.

The Hauptgebäude is located on the Charlottenburg campus. The campus is split by Straße des 17. Juni. The Hauptgebäude houses the university administration and main lecture halls. During Germany’s division, the Großem Hörsaal hosted seven sessions of the German Bundestag. This took place in 1955, 1956, and 1958.

The Hauptgebäude was designed by Richard Lucae. After his death in 1877, Friedrich Hitzig and Julius Carl Raschdorff completed the plans. Construction lasted from 1878 to 1884. The building showcases a monumental Neorenaissance style. In 1939, the forecourt was altered during the construction of the East-West Axis. A staircase and paved areas replaced the original green spaces.

The Hauptgebäude suffered extensive damage during World War II. Three of the original five inner courtyards were rebuilt. The side wings and rear facade were also restored. However, the front facade was torn down in the early 1950s. In 1965, a new structure designed by Kurt Dübbers was added. This modern addition faces Straße des 17. Juni. The ten-story building features an aluminum facade. It also includes the Auditorium Maximum.

Today, the Technische Universität Berlin continues to thrive. It fosters collaboration with companies like Deutsche Telekom and Siemens. The university has been recognized as a university of excellence. This acknowledges its leading role in research and innovation.

The story of the Hauptgebäude reflects Berlin’s own journey. From its imperial roots to its postwar rebirth. This building is a testament to German engineering and academic excellence. Take a moment to appreciate the blend of history and progress before us. It is a fitting symbol for the Technische Universität Berlin. A university that continues to shape the future.
