“A battlefield turned province, can you imagine?” The old woman’s voice crackled, drawing my attention. We stood before Hậu Nghĩa, a name that echoes a turbulent past. This town, once the heart of a South Vietnamese province, holds within its streets a story of conflict and change. Hậu Nghĩa province, established in 1963, wasn’t just a patch of land. It was carved from pieces of Long An, Bình Dương, and Tây Ninh provinces, a strategic move during the war. Picture this: a province born from conflict, bordering Cambodia, with its capital in Khiệm Cường. Hậu Nghĩa was a key player in the Vietnam War, its landscape scarred by battles and clandestine operations. Author Stuart A. Herrington’s book, “Stalking the Vietcong: Inside Operation Phoenix,” recounts the covert activities that unfolded in this very province in 1971. The province was a patchwork of districts: Củ Chi, Đức Hòa, Đức Huệ, and Trảng Bàng. Each name whispers tales of resilience and struggle. Imagine the daily lives of people living under the shadow of war, their homes and fields transformed into battlegrounds. The fate of Hậu Nghĩa province took a dramatic turn in 1976. The province itself was dissolved, its land divided among its neighbors. Trảng Bàng became part of Tây Ninh, Củ Chi was absorbed into Ho Chi Minh City, and Đức Hòa and Đức Huệ joined Long An. Khiệm Cường, once a bustling provincial capital, transformed into the quieter town we see today: Hậu Nghĩa within Đức Hòa District. This town, Hậu Nghĩa, stands as a silent witness to the shifting tides of history. It’s a reminder of how borders change, how provinces vanish, and how the echoes of war linger in the names of towns.
