Tucked away in East Jerusalem, Ma’ale HaShalom whispers tales of peace and papal visits. Ma’ale HaShalom, also known as the Pope’s Road, isn’t just a street. It’s a bridge between eras. Imagine this bustling road before 1964. It was nothing more than a humble dirt track, winding its way towards Mount Zion. Then, a papal visit changed everything. Pope Paul VI planned a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The Jordanians, in a gesture of respect, agreed to transform the dusty path into a proper road. This newly paved road, Ma’ale HaShalom, allowed the Pope to reach the Coenaculum in comfort. Today, Ma’ale HaShalom connects Route 60 to Ma’alot Ir David, eventually merging into Derech ha-Ofel. It skirts the southern edge of the Old City. It leads to the Dung Gate, the entrance to the Jewish Quarter. Along Ma’ale HaShalom, you’ll find the Protestant Mount Zion Cemetery and several Catholic cemeteries. Though it lies outside the current Old City walls, Ma’ale HaShalom holds a place within the historically sacred Jerusalem. So, as you stand on Ma’ale HaShalom, remember the story of its transformation. It evolved from a humble dirt track to a road fit for a Pope, a testament to the power of peace and diplomacy.
