A curious tale unfolds in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey. It’s a story of names, of ambition, and a touch of real estate dreams. Hasbrouck Heights wasn’t always Hasbrouck Heights. In the mid-1800s, this area, nestled between Passaic and Ridgefield Park, was simply known as Corona. It grew around two railroad stations, a humble beginning. The transformation began in 1889. Local leaders, perhaps seeking a grander image, decided to rename the town in honor of Jacob Dillon Hasbrouck. Hasbrouck was the general manager of the New Jersey and New York Railroad. This railroad was instrumental in the town’s early growth. The “Heights” was added to distinguish the town from another Hasbrouck in upstate New York, and to avoid confusion with Corona, Queens. Hasbrouck Heights officially became a borough in 1894. This was during a period of rapid borough creation in Bergen County, a phenomenon known as “Boroughitis.” This tiny town, a mere 1.53 square miles, boasts a rich history. As of 2010, Hasbrouck Heights had a population of 11,842. This reflects a steady growth since its incorporation. Hasbrouck Heights is conveniently located approximately 10 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan and 8 miles west of Upper Manhattan, making it a desirable suburb for commuters. A small plane crash in 1935 reminds us of the town’s proximity to Teterboro Airport. The plane, after taking off from Teterboro, lost altitude and crashed on Route 17. The driver of the car the plane hit survived with only bruises. The pilot and co-pilot, however, were severely injured. Another aviation incident occurred in 1966, when a pilot crash-landed his plane on a front lawn after losing an engine. Incredibly, the pilot survived, and the residents were not home at the time. These are just a few glimpses into the intriguing history of Hasbrouck Heights. It’s a story of transformation, of close calls, and a community that has grown and thrived over the years. From a quiet farming community to a bustling suburb, Hasbrouck Heights has certainly earned its place in the tapestry of New Jersey’s history.
