Harvard Elementary became part of the Houston Independent School District in 1921, solidifying its place in the city’s educational landscape. The school, initially segregated, finally desegregated by 1970, reflecting the changing social dynamics of the time. The old brick building, having served generations of students, was demolished in 1980. A new addition was constructed, modernizing the school while preserving its legacy. Harvard Elementary School faced a challenge in 2004. Increased traffic on Studewood Street prompted a modification of the school’s attendance boundary. This change, affecting about 20 children, ensured their safety by preventing them from crossing the busy street. Fast forward to 2006, a group of dedicated parents, recognizing the school’s potential, partnered with Principal Kevin Beringer to revitalize Harvard Elementary. Their efforts bore fruit. By 2008, Harvard Elementary had become a sought-after school in the Heights. It even had a waiting list for prospective students, a testament to its transformation. The school’s remarkable turnaround was crowned with the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School award in 2008. This recognition solidified Harvard Elementary’s position as a beacon of educational excellence. Harvard Elementary School also requires its students to wear uniforms, creating a sense of unity and belonging within the school community.
