A towering bronze statue. It stands proudly near the south side of the Pennsylvania State Capitol. This is General John Frederick Hartranft. A remarkable figure in Pennsylvania’s history. He wasn’t just a governor. He was a Civil War hero a politician and a pivotal part of Philadelphia’s past.

Hartranft’s life was one of dramatic turns. Born in 1830 in Montgomery County. He graduated from Union College in 1853. He initially worked as a civil engineer. His path took a sharp turn with the outbreak of the Civil War.

He initially commanded the Fourth Pennsylvania Volunteers. Their ninety-day enlistments expired at the Battle of Bull Run. The soldiers abandoned him. Despite this humiliating experience Hartranft bravely stayed. He even earned a Medal of Honor for his valor. This act salvaged his reputation. He went on to command the 51st Pennsylvania Volunteers.

Hartranft’s courage shone at Antietam. His troops were the first to successfully storm Burnside’s Bridge. He also led his men in crucial assaults later that day. His leadership skills extended beyond the battlefield. During a difficult campaign facing high losses and nearing enlistment expiration. His inspiring speech convinced his men to reenlist. This demonstrates his incredible ability to motivate and inspire.

His military career culminated in his role as provost marshal. He oversaw the Washington Arsenal prison. It was Hartranft’s solemn duty to signal the executioner for the hanging of Lincoln’s assassination conspirators. A stark and unforgettable task.

After the war Hartranft transitioned into politics. He served as Auditor General under Governor Geary. He then became Governor of Pennsylvania serving two terms. He even ran for President in 1876. Although he lost he was a prominent figure in the Republican party.

His post-gubernatorial life was equally impressive. He headed the Pennsylvania National Guard. He also served as Philadelphia’s postmaster and collector of the city port. His contributions shaped Philadelphia’s civic landscape.

John Frederick Hartranft’s life is a testament to resilience and leadership. He faced setbacks with courage. He displayed exemplary service.
