Who remembers the events of August 1923? This seemingly ordinary spot holds a grim history. It marks the location where Harry McEntee, a Captain in the Dublin Brigade of the Irish Republican Army, met a tragic end. He was found dead on August 3rd, 1923. He lay in a field near Maher’s farm, close to Jamestown Road in Finglas. McEntee’s body bore multiple bullet wounds, a silent testament to the violence that gripped Dublin during those turbulent years. It is believed that McEntee was abducted and later killed by members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). This occurred on July 31st, just a few days before his body was discovered. This unit, notorious for its brutal tactics, was based in Oriel House on Westland Row. McEntee’s death serves as a chilling reminder of the human cost of conflict and the long shadow it can cast. We remember Harry McEntee. May he rest in peace.
