On May 1, 1908, a crowd of 20,000 people gathered. The mayors of Boston and Cambridge were among the spectators. A Boston patrolman secured Houdini’s hands behind his back with handcuffs. He then chained him to a collar around his neck. A signal sounded. Houdini leaped from the bridge into the cold water 30 feet below.

The crowd held its breath. Seconds stretched into an eternity. After 40 seconds, Houdini resurfaced. He emerged with the restraints in his hands. The crowd erupted in cheers. Houdini had done it again. He had defied the impossible.
