Once known as the “Treitschkepark” the Harry-Bresslau-Park holds a deeper story than its green expanse suggests. This park in Berlin’s Steglitz district is more than just a place for recreation. It’s a testament to intellectual courage.
The Harry-Bresslau-Park is located at Lepsius- and Treitschkestrasse. The park’s story began without a name. Locals simply called it “Treitschkepark”. But history demanded a change.
In 2008, the district assembly of Steglitz-Zehlendorf made a crucial decision. The park would be renamed Harry-Bresslau-Park. This decision linked the park to the adjacent Treitschkestrasse. More importantly, it addressed a dark chapter in German history.
Heinrich von Treitschke, the namesake of the street, was a figure of controversy. He was known as a pioneer of antisemitism. His infamous quote, “The Jews are our misfortune,” encapsulates his hateful ideology.
Harry Bresslau, a Jewish historian and diplomat, bravely challenged Treitschke. He stood as the first Jewish scientist to confront Treitschke during the Berlin Antisemitism Dispute. The Harry-Bresslau-Park serves as a reminder of this confrontation.
A stele stands at the park’s northwest corner. It tells the story of these events. It highlights Bresslau’s courage in the face of prejudice.
Beyond its historical significance, the Harry-Bresslau-Park offers a space for leisure and recreation. The park covers approximately 1.8 hectares. The redesign considered the construction of the Boulevard Berlin shopping center. It features mature trees and open lawn areas. The park’s pathways follow the natural routes created over time.
For the little ones, there is a sand pit and playground. For older children, a soccer field and a climbing wall. Even ping pong tables and basketball courts are available. The park caters to all ages.
