Harris and his wife, Erma, established a “soul-saving station”. This small basement church was known as Elm Park COGIC. The official start date? January 1, 1946. Within just a few years, Elder Harris felt the need for a new sanctuary. His dream was to build it right on top of their little basement church. As fate would have it, a young contractor named Clifton Black walked into Elm Park Church of God in Christ. Upon receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost, Clifton Black became a member. By 1959, his construction expertise had helped bring Elder Harris’ vision to life. The newly christened Harris Temple Church of God in Christ stood tall, valued at over $35,000 – a testament to their faith and community spirit.
