It’s a symbol of Houston’s commitment to justice and the rule of law. The Harris County Civil Courthouse is the fifth courthouse to grace this very spot. Courthouse Square, as it’s known, has been the heart of Harris County government for over 160 years. Imagine the stories these walls could tell. Designed by the renowned Dallas firm Lang & Witchell, the courthouse boasts a stunning neo-classical design. Those intricate details you see, the granite base, the light brown brick, the terra cotta and limestone ornaments, all speak to a time when craftsmanship was paramount. The building has seen its share of changes over the years. Originally, grand staircases led up to the main entrance on the second floor. Today, the entrance has been moved to street level, but you can still picture those elegant steps. Inside, a grand rotunda once soared upwards, crowned by the majestic dome. Sadly, renovations in the 1950s enclosed the dome and divided the rotunda, sacrificing some of the original grandeur for more functional office space. While the interior might not be what it once was, the Harris County Civil Courthouse remains a powerful symbol of civic pride and architectural splendor.
