You might not guess it looking at the swings and slides, but this place has a fascinating history. Harold Ickes Playground started its life as a simple asphalt softball field. Over time, it fell into disrepair and became underused. But the community saw its potential. In 2017, a movement began to breathe new life into Harold Ickes Playground. Thanks to local activists, the city council, and the borough president, $3 million was allocated to transform the space. This wasn’t just a simple facelift. They envisioned a state-of-the-art skate park, complete with ramps, bowls, and rails. The project took time, with design and planning phases lasting a couple of years. During that time, a temporary “pump track” was installed, offering a taste of things to come. The pump track was a hit, drawing families and experienced skaters alike. Finally, after much anticipation, the new Harold Ickes Playground opened its gates. The transformation was remarkable. The old asphalt was replaced with a smooth, concrete skate park, a haven for skaters and BMX bikers. But the renovations didn’t stop there. Harold Ickes Playground also got a parkour space, a climbing boulder, and new landscaping. They even added practical amenities like a bike repair station, air pumps, and water bottle filling stations. What was once a forgotten corner of Red Hook became a vibrant hub for the community.
