What if a small patch of land could hold a century of defiance? Here at Harmony Triangle, a seemingly ordinary piece of concrete holds a powerful story. Harmony Triangle might not boast towering structures or grand monuments. But it embodies a spirit of resistance, a testament to one man’s battle against the relentless march of progress. In 1910, New York City invoked eminent domain to claim land for the Seventh Avenue subway line. Over 250 buildings were condemned, including David Hess’s five-story apartment building. After a protracted fight, Hess was forced to relinquish his property. However, a tiny triangular piece, a mere 500 square inches, was overlooked. This sliver became the Hess Triangle. When the city asked Hess to donate the triangle for public use, he refused. He saw it as a symbol of his struggle, a final stand against the city’s encroachment. The Hess family took the city to court and won, securing their ownership of the smallest piece of private property in New York City. In 1922, Hess covered the triangle in mosaic tiles, declaring it “Property of the Hess Estate which has never been dedicated for public purposes.” Though pedestrians unknowingly tread upon it, the Hess Triangle remains. A small but powerful reminder of one man’s fight for his property. A silent protest etched in stone and tile. While the surrounding landscape changed drastically with the construction of the subway, Harmony Triangle stubbornly persists. It carries the echoes of a bygone era, a poignant symbol of resilience in the face of overwhelming odds.
