Once upon a time in San Antonio’s Dignowity Hill, a man with a vision built more than just a house. That man was Dr. Anthony Michael Dignowity. He was a Czechoslovakian immigrant. He became a public official, a medical doctor, and an abolitionist.

Harmony House was not just a home. It was a symbol of progress and community. Dignowity Hill was San Antonio’s first exclusive residential suburb. It was less than a mile from downtown.

Dr. Dignowity arrived in San Antonio after immigrating to the U.S. in 1831. He came from Natchez, Mississippi, with volunteers for the Mexican War. He built Harmony House on a hillside. It offered a beautiful view of downtown. He then sold surrounding plots to his wealthy friends.

Families like the Friedrichs, Elmendorfs, Lockwoods, and Otts built homes here. These homes reflected the best designs of their time. They were typically two stories made of limestone and brick.

Dignowity Hill’s high elevation made it desirable. Its proximity to downtown was also appealing. The large lots allowed residents to create water collecting systems. This was necessary because of the lack of city water.

The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1877 changed the neighborhood. By 1914, industry surrounded Dignowity Hill. Commerce grew to the south. Modest homes appeared to the east.

Dr. Dignowity passed away in 1875. Harmony House stood for many years after. Sadly, it was torn down in 1926. Dignowity Park was established on the property.

Today, Dignowity Hill has a rich history. It is a designated historic district. The district preserves the area’s unique cultural and historic character. The boundaries include Sherman Street, Commerce Street, Palmetto Street, and Cherry Street.

Imagine Harmony House standing here once again. Picture Dr. Dignowity welcoming his friends. Envision the lively conversations and the fine breezes. This was a place of community.

Harmony House is gone but Dignowity Hill remains. The neighborhood continues to evolve. It retains its charm and historic significance. It reminds us of the past. It inspires us to build a harmonious future.
