Gazing upon Harheim, one might initially see just another Frankfurt suburb. But beneath the modern facade lies a vibrant tapestry of history. Harheim’s story begins in 786, marked in the annals of the Lorsch monastery as “Horeheim.” This early name, “hore” hinting at marshland, evokes images of a lush, watery landscape. Harheim was again mentioned in an 817 exchange document between Emperor Louis the Pious and Fulda Monastery. This document, remarkably, survives in both its original (damaged) form and a 12th-century copy.

Harheim transitioned through various rulers. From the Lords of Münzenberg to the Falkensteiners, then to the Eppsteiners. In 1435, Harheim was sold to Frankfurt, contributing taxes to the city. However, the Eppsteiners bought it back in 1511. The Stolbergs inherited the area in 1535, followed by Kurmainz in 1581, a period lasting over two centuries. During this time, the Thirty Years’ War ravaged Harheim, leaving it in ruins.

Harheim’s journey continued through the 19th century. It became part of Nassau-Usingen, then the Duchy of Nassau. After the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, Harheim was ceded to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. This resulted in a complex legal situation, with Nassau, Mainz, and Solms laws all applying in different contexts. This legal tangle was only resolved with the introduction of the German Civil Code in 1900.

Harheim remained part of Hesse until 1972 when it became part of Frankfurt. This incorporation wasn’t without its drama. Locals vehemently opposed the move, even dumping manure in front of the city hall. This resistance was so memorable that it was dramatized in a TV series, “Die Wilsheimer,” featuring local actors. Even today, Harheim’s “certain independence” is acknowledged on Frankfurt’s official website. Harheim has retained its village charm despite new developments. Its vibrant community life and lively Kerb festival are renowned beyond its borders. Harheim continues to evolve. New housing areas are springing up, transforming the landscape while holding onto its unique character.
