Hear the melodic chimes of Hardy Memorial Tower. They resonate across the San Diego State University campus. This isn’t just any bell tower. It’s a 119.1-foot-tall monument to history and to a man named Dr Edward Hardy.

Hardy Memorial Tower stands proudly. It’s a stunning example of Mission/Spanish Revival architecture. Built in 1931 as a Works Progress Administration project it served as SDSU’s first library. Imagine students poring over books within its walls.

More than just books lived within Hardy Memorial Tower. In 2004 two long-lost murals were rediscovered. One depicts men unloading National Recovery Act packages. The other a vibrant portrayal of San Diego’s tuna industry. These hidden treasures highlight the tower’s role in preserving local history. The university even received a Governor’s Historic Preservation Award in 2008 for its restoration efforts.

The Fletcher Symphonic Carillon also calls Hardy Memorial Tower home. Installed in 1946 it consists of 204 bells spanning six octaves. It’s a gift from Senator and Mrs Ed Fletcher. This carillon serves as a memorial to students lost in war. The bells’ harmonious sound adds another layer of beauty to this impressive landmark.

The tower’s namesake Dr Edward Hardy. He served as president of SDSU’s predecessor from 1910 to 1935. He oversaw the college’s relocation to Montezuma Mesa. He also played significant roles on both the State and City Boards of Education. After retirement in 1936 he became executive director of the San Diego Museum. Today Hardy Avenue and Hardy Elementary School also bear his name. His legacy continues to live through this tower.

Hardy Memorial Tower stands as a powerful symbol of San Diego State University. It’s a blend of architectural beauty history and community spirit. A testament to the past it stands ready to welcome new generations to the SDSU campus. The chimes continue to play their soulful melody. A reminder of its history and resilience.
