Did you know that Hardwick’s history stretches back to 991 AD? That’s right. Long before the modern housing estates. Long before the A428 bypassed St Neots Road. This village. This Hardwick. Has a story far older than you might think.

Imagine a time when Hardwick was just a few houses and farmland. Centred around St Mary’s Church. A tiny hamlet nestled in the Cambridgeshire landscape. The first documented mention comes from 991 AD. A year of Danish threats. Ealdorman Beortnoth gave his Hardwick lands to Ely Priory. A burial offering should he fall in battle.

The Domesday Book of 1086 paints a vivid picture. Seven villeins. Four servi. Two ox plough teams. Hardwick was a small agricultural community. The manor covered 5 hides one virgate and 22 acres. Life was simple. Life was agricultural. Yet it was a life rich in history.

Centuries passed. The manor changed hands. The Bishop of Ely held much of the land. Parts passed to nuns at Swaffham Bulbeck. The village. Our Hardwick. Grew slowly. Expanding around its ancient church.

Then came the 1960s. A massive transformation. Hundreds of houses sprung up. Built on orchard land to the north. The new roads bore the names of the trees they replaced. Ellison. Bramley. Limes. Pippin. Quince. Worcester. Hardwick was booming.

Today. Hardwick boasts a community primary school. A pub. The Blue Lion. A sports and social club. Scout and Guide huts. St Mary’s Church even built a new hall. The Cabin opened in 2020. The village has expanded again. New houses fill the spaces. Once large gardens now hold new homes. Meridian Close and Grace Crescent are among the newest additions.

The A428 was upgraded in 2006 and 2007. A new dual carriageway bypassed much of the village. The postcode even changed from CB3 to CB23. Hardwick continues to evolve.

But at the heart of this modern village lies its ancient past. St Mary’s Church stands as a testament. A reminder of Hardwick’s long and fascinating history. The village itself. Our Hardwick. A blend of ancient and modern. A place where history and progress meet.
