Texas, 1907. A train chugs along the newly laid Beaumont, Sour Lake and Western Railway. The heirs of the influential Hardin family, envisioning a bustling community, donate land for a new town. This town, right here, would become Hardin. The plat was officially filed in August 1907 by W.F. Hardin, a railroad officer, and R.C. Duff, president of the Western Townsite Company. Hardin in its infancy consisted of a few stores, a cotton gin, a school, and two churches, serving a small population of around eighty people. The name Hardin officially arrived in 1920, when the local post office changed its designation from nearby Walter. The discovery of the Hardin oilfield in 1935, west of the town, brought a boom. Subsequent oil discoveries in the surrounding area further fueled Hardin’s growth. While oil played a significant role, Hardin has always remained primarily an agricultural community. Education has been a cornerstone of Hardin. The Hardin Independent School District, a state-recognized system, boasts elementary, middle, and high school campuses. Modernization touched Hardin in 2003 when the Texas Department of Transportation installed a traffic signal at the intersection of Highway 146 North and FM 834. A new City Hall, constructed in 2004, stands as a testament to Hardin’s continued development. Hardin is more than just buildings and infrastructure. It’s a community where people care about people. The Hardin Community Center provides senior citizens with meals and fellowship. The well-equipped Liberty County ESD No. 7 Fire Department stands ready. For spiritual needs, the United Pentecostal Church, Hardin Methodist Church, and Hardin Baptist Church offer a variety of worship experiences. The Hardin Lions Club embodies the town’s spirit of service. Among the businesses thriving within Hardin are a feed store, grocery store, beauty shop, barber shop, daycare center, convenience store, and discount store. Hardin, nestled between Houston and Beaumont, offers the tranquility of small-town living with easy access to big-city amenities. This small but growing community, with its excellent school system and strong values, remains a great place to live and raise a family.
