“What secrets does this gate hold?” I wonder as we approach the Harbour Gate. The Harbour Gate stands as a modern version of the old city gate. It marks your arrival to the old city area. This crucial juncture separates old Muscat from the new.

The Muscat Gate Museum is housed within this imposing structure. It is more than just a gate. It’s a museum and a window into Oman’s rich history.

Until the 1970s the town gates closed three hours after sunset. No one could walk after sunset without a lighted lantern. Motor traffic went through a hole in the town wall.

The Muscat Gate we see today opened in January 2001. The Muscat Gate Museum contains displays of Oman’s history from Neolithic times to the present. The Muscat Gate Museum has exhibits on Muscat’s water springs. It showcases ancient wells, underground channels, souks, houses, mosques, harbors and forts.

Imagine climbing the circular stairway inside the Harbour Gate. I guess there are about 50 low rise steps. The stairway leads to a tower covered with a wooden ceiling. This tower leads to a grand door announcing the presence of the Muscat Gate Museum. What a surprise. A museum on a gateway.

Even if the Muscat Gate Museum is closed, you can walk around. You can happily observe the surroundings. The arched wooden paneled entry door is a beautiful piece of work. Red and green glass pieces adorn the top. A gold plated relief of the archway is embossed above the door.

A corridor with a series of arches leads to a vast open green space. There is a manicured lawn in the garden. Wooden benches are interspersed throughout. Small green bushes line the garden edges. Trees are scattered in the green space.

From this roof garden, you can see beautiful vistas. You can see the Muscat Harbour. You can see cruise liners far away. The blue sea stretches beyond. On the other side, you see motorways. Roads lead into and out of the old city.

The Muscat Gate used to act as an official gate for the old city. It stopped movement in and out of the city at night. The Harbour Gate was renovated and opened in its current form in 1995.

Inside the Muscat Gate Museum, you can explore a map of Oman. You can see a recreated city. Other important sites are exhibited. Exhibits detail the city and the history of the country. Learn about Oman’s long journey with a focus on Muscat. The Falaj irrigation system is highlighted. The country’s architecture is showcased. See mosques, palaces, halls, wooden arches and doors.

The museum takes you through the various stages of development of Muscat. See its growth from a commercial port to a prosperous capital. The Muscat Gate stands witness to Muscat’s relics and history.

The Muscat Gate is more than just a gate. Park the car and explore this historic site. Take in the view. Smell the flowers. Learn a little from the Muscat Gate Museum.

This Harbour Gate is a beautiful gate. Many people drive through it on a rush to get somewhere more exciting. Don’t just pass through. Stop and discover the secrets held within the Muscat Gate.
