What if a neighborhood could whisper its story? Here in Harbor Gateway, the whispers are loud and clear. Harbor Gateway, once known as the “Shoestring” because of its unusual, narrow shape, stretches across 5.14 square miles in Los Angeles. This area has a rich history, from its annexation to its struggles with crime and racial tensions. Harbor Gateway became part of Los Angeles in 1906. The city needed a link to the port cities of Wilmington and San Pedro. This “Shoestring Annexation,” as it was called, was a strategic move to connect Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean. The name “Harbor Gateway” officially replaced “Shoestring” in 1985. The neighborhood’s unique geography, a long north-south corridor, has played a significant role in its development. Imagine this area before World War II, just open fields. Then came factories, drawing workers who needed homes. Small houses and duplexes sprang up, filling the landscape. Cubans arrived in the 1960s, followed by Mexican immigrants in the 1970s. By the late 1980s, Harbor Gateway was one of Los Angeles’s fastest-growing areas. But growth brought challenges. Despite its new name, Harbor Gateway in 1989 lacked a true sense of community. There was no central business district, no civic center, not even a post office. The area grappled with crime, and residents pointed to the numerous liquor stores as contributing factors. Harbor Gateway also faced periods of racial tension and gang violence. In the 1990s, clashes between Black and Latino gangs marred the community. The tragic death of Cheryl Green, a 14-year-old Black girl, in 2006 became a turning point. The incident spurred community leaders and law enforcement to address the violence. Today, Harbor Gateway continues to evolve. It’s a diverse community with a mix of residential and industrial areas. The Harbor Gateway Transit Center serves as a major transportation hub, connecting the area to the wider Los Angeles region. The echoes of Harbor Gateway’s past are still present. But through its trials, the neighborhood continues to strive for a better future.
