Ever wondered about a place where aerobatic dreams took flight? Welcome to Harbican Airport later known as Sack-O-Grande Acroport. This wasn’t just any airfield. It was a haven for aerobatic pilots a place where daring maneuvers were the norm.

Harbican Airport located northwest of Houston had a unique history. It operated for around 25 years opening sometime around 1971. Initially a private airfield it was a hub for single-engine aircraft. Early aerial photos show small planes parked near small buildings a quiet scene.

The airport’s transformation began in 1996. David Mafrige a renowned aerobatic competitor and airshow performer purchased it. He renamed it Sack-O-Grande Acroport transforming it into an aerobatic training center. Imagine two unidentified aerobatic biplanes gracefully landing for the very first time. Andy “Airshow” Miller a fellow aerobatic enthusiast is seen here proudly posing next to one. The change was dramatic. Suddenly Harbican Airport was no longer just an airfield. It became a dynamic center for the exciting world of aerobatics.

Sack-O-Grande Acroport became famous for its aerobatic box. This was a designated airspace allowing pilots to perform complex maneuvers. The unique location made it a primary training ground for aerobatic pilots across central Texas. Sadly this unique airspace waiver became rendered useless in 2003 due to a lowering of the Houston Bravo airspace.

Even with challenges Sack-O-Grande Acroport remained operational until 2014. A NOTAM announced its closure. Aerial views from around 2012 show a scene of quiet inactivity. The hangars and runway still stood yet the sounds of roaring engines were gone. The once vibrant airfield had become quiet.

Today the legacy of Harbican Airport and Sack-O-Grande Acroport lives on in the memories of pilots who trained there. It was a special place a testament to the passion for flight and the thrill of aerobatics. It’s a reminder of how even the smallest airfields can leave a big impact.
