Har Nof

Standing at the foot of Har Nof, the name itself, Hebrew for ‘Scenic Mountain’, evokes a sense of grandeur. It’s a vibrant neighborhood that’s been a prominent feature of Jerusalem since the early 1980s. Har Nof is a world unto itself, built on a terraced mountainside, a unique feature of the neighborhood. Just as the mountain rises above the city, so too does the spirit of this place, home primarily to Orthodox Jews. The first residents appeared in 1985, but this place has been a part of history for much longer. The neighborhood’s foundations were built on ancient agricultural settlements that served Jerusalem as far back as Talmudic times. The echoes of long-lost wine presses, farmhouses, and terraces echo whispers of Jerusalem’s ancient life. A walk through Har Nof reveals a community that has preserved its traditions and way of life. The neighborhood has a high birth rate, more than 60% of its inhabitants are Haredim, ultra-Orthodox Jews, and the rest are religious-Zionist. While the houses are tightly packed, the stunning view of the Judean Hills is never far away. The neighborhood has a high density of synagogues, yeshivas, and Torah study institutions, a testament to the strong religious identity of the residents. The towering presence of the synagogue of the Bostoner Rebbe, a prominent rabbi in the Hasidic community, speaks volumes about the neighborhood’s faith. Even though it’s far from the city center, the spirit of Jerusalem is felt deeply within the walls of Har Nof. It is a testament to the city’s history and the strength of its religious communities.
