William Walsh, their owner, faced a choice – repair his deteriorating fleet or find a better solution. He chose the latter, leading to the Ha’penny Bridge’s creation. For his investment, Walsh received 3,000 pounds and exclusive rights to collect a ha’penny toll from every pedestrian for a century. This bridge replaced those overcrowded ferries, becoming the first dedicated pedestrian crossing over the Liffey. For years it held the unique distinction of being the sole pedestrian bridge, only joined by the Millennium Bridge in 1999. Today, the Ha’penny Bridge remains a beloved landmark. Thousands of pedestrians traverse its white-painted iron arches daily, their footsteps a testament to its enduring appeal.
