Atop the Hanuman Temple in Connaught Place a crescent moon shines brightly. This isn’t just any moon. It’s a symbol of a unique story a testament to faith’s power.

This ancient Hanuman Temple is believed to be one of five built by the Pandavas after their victory at Kurukshetra. It stands as a symbol of Delhi’s rich history. Legend says the original structure dates back to the Mahabharata era. Maharaja Jai Singh later reconstructed it around the same time he built the Jantar Mantar.

The temple’s main idol is unusual. It depicts Bala Hanuman the youthful Hanuman. His face is turned south. He holds a gada in his left hand his right hand rests prayerfully on his chest. The temple itself is reported to be 108 feet tall.

The temple’s entrance the Dwar is stunning. Skilled craftsmen adorned it with embossed artwork. Inside the roof of the main hall is covered with paintings depicting the Ramayana. Below these paintings are verses from Tulsidas’s Sundarkanda engraved in marble.

Tulsidas himself a revered poet and author of the Hanuman Chalisa is said to have visited. A Mughal emperor asked him for a miracle. Tulsidas performed it with Hanuman’s blessings. Pleased the emperor gifted the temple the crescent moon finial. This symbol possibly saved the temple from destruction by later rulers.

Since August 1 1964 the temple has witnessed a remarkable feat. The mantra “Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram” is chanted continuously. This 24-hour devotion is even documented in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated here with great enthusiasm. Devotees in Hanuman masks and tails fill the streets in vibrant processions. Tuesdays and Saturdays are special days of worship. The temple attracts many devotees then. The temple complex also offers mehendi designs a traditional form of body art.
