For centuries windmills dotted the Münster landscape. Over thirty at one point. Mostly windmills some watermills and a few powered by horses. The Hanseller Mühle’s story begins much earlier. Records show a mill here as early as 1594. It was known then as the Grever-Weges-Mühle and later the Eschmühle. It faced destruction multiple times. It was rebuilt in the 19th century as a Dutch-style windmill. A tower windmill.
Sadly Münster’s last windmill met a tragic end. Located near the Germania Brewery on Grevener Strasse. It collapsed in 1915. It was then demolished. Nothing remains of the old mill today. A modern supermarket stands in its place.
But the spirit of the Hanseller Mühle lives on. This isn’t the original mill. However it’s a testament to Münster’s enduring connection to its past.
