Established in 1883 the Hansa-Gymnasium Bergedorf boasts a rich history. It began as the Hohe Burgerschule. Its name changed to Hansa-Schule then Hansa-Gymnasium. The school moved several times before settling into its current location on Hermann-Distel-Strasse in 1914. This building a masterpiece of Hamburg architect Fritz Schumacher is a testament to its enduring legacy.
Imagine the excitement of its opening. The Hansa-Gymnasium stood proudly a beacon of learning in Bergedorf. The original building was striking a blend of brick and limestone. Artful figures adorned the facade. A fountain with a fox added to its charm. Alas tragedy struck in 1969. A fire destroyed the left wing including the gymnasium and auditorium. Initially members of the APO were blamed. Later it was revealed former students were responsible. They set further fires including one at a timber yard. The perpetrators were jailed.
The loss of the auditorium was significant. The decision was made not to rebuild it. Instead a new classroom wing was constructed in 1971. This addressed pressing space needs. It housed classrooms for fifth graders and upper schoolers. Specialized rooms for biology art music and drama were also added. A new gymnasium a system building was added in 1972. A replacement gymnasium was built where the old auditorium stood. It served as a new auditorium from 1986 to 1987. This gymnasium was listed as a protected monument in 2022. Another expansion happened in 2006. A floor was added to the 1971 wing. New classrooms for geography and history resulted. A cafeteria and a senior study room were also added in the basement. A new auditorium was built between the old and new sections. It was completed in 2007. The old building’s facade and roof were renovated in 2009. Interactive whiteboards were installed in classrooms from 2011 onwards. An IServ school server was added to the network in 2012. The schoolyard was redesigned in 2013 thanks to donations.
Today the Hansa-Gymnasium is a thriving institution. It offers diverse programs including bilingual classes and a focus on STEM subjects. It also has a renowned music program. The school’s commitment to academic excellence has shaped the lives of generations of students. Many prominent individuals including artists politicians and academics are alumni.
