How about a history lesson about a city with many names? Welcome to Hanoi the capital of Vietnam. Hanoi is more than just a city. It is a living museum. It is a testament to Vietnam’s enduring spirit.

Hanoi’s story begins long before it was called Hanoi. Around the third century BC a citadel was built here. It was known as Cổ Loa. Cổ Loa was the first political center of Vietnamese civilization.

For over a thousand years Hanoi was under Chinese rule. In 1010 Emperor Lý Thái Tổ established the capital of the Vietnamese nation here. He named it Thăng Long meaning ascending dragon. Legend says he saw a dragon rising from the Red River. This was a good omen for the new capital.

Through the centuries Hanoi bore witness to dynastic changes. It was a strategic prize in regional conflicts. The city transformed reflecting the cultural influences of its rulers.

In 1428 King Lê Lợi renamed the city Đông Kinh meaning eastern capital. This name stuck until 1789. But in 1802 the Nguyễn dynasty moved the capital to Huế. The city was renamed Hanoi in 1831. Hanoi means inside the river.

From 1902 to 1945 Hanoi was the capital of French Indochina. The French left their mark on the city’s architecture. You can still see French colonial buildings today. This includes tree-lined boulevards and grand villas.

After the August Revolution Hanoi became the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This was a newly independent country. The city then played a pivotal role in the Vietnam War. It became a symbol of Vietnamese resilience.

In 1976 North and South Vietnam reunified. Hanoi became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In 2008 Hà Tây Province was annexed into Hanoi. This almost tripled Hanoi’s area.

Today Hanoi is the cultural economic and educational center of Northern Vietnam. Hanoi attracted 18.7 million visitors in 2022. The Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city also has the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

As you explore Hanoi notice the mix of architectural styles. There is French colonial architecture. There are brutalist apartments. There are disorganized alleys and tube houses. These reflect the city’s rapid growth in the 20th century.

Hanoi is known as the city of lakes. It has many scenic lakes. Hoàn Kiếm Lake is one of the most famous. It is linked to the legend of the magic sword. West Lake is the largest lake in Hanoi.

Hanoi is more than a capital city. It is a testament to Vietnamese culture. Hanoi offers a journey through time. It offers a blend of ancient traditions and modern aspirations. As you wander through its streets remember its many names. Remember its long history. Remember Hanoi’s spirit.
