The year is 1902. Imagine the bustling scene at the newly opened Hanoi Train Station. The air vibrates with excitement. The scent of coal smoke mingles with the fragrant steam rising from bowls of pho. Hanoi Train Station, a grand testament to French engineering, stands proudly. It’s a gateway to a new era of travel in Vietnam. Hanoi Train Station, originally known as Hang Co Station, was a vital part of the French Indochina railway network. This network aimed to connect the vast reaches of French Indochina. The station’s construction began in 1899. It was inaugurated in 1902, coinciding with the completion of the iconic Long Bien Bridge. Hanoi Train Station initially served the Hanoi-Lang Son route. It quickly expanded its reach to include Hai Phong in 1903 and Lao Cai in 1905. By 1936, Hanoi Train Station became the official starting point of the Trans-Vietnam railway. This railway, also known as the Reunification Express, stretched an impressive 1,700 kilometers to Saigon. Hanoi Train Station played a crucial role during the Vietnam War. It facilitated the transport of troops and supplies. Tragically, the station suffered damage during the 1972 bombing campaign. Its central hall was destroyed, later rebuilt in a contrasting modern style. The original side wings, however, survived and still stand as silent witnesses to history. Today, Hanoi Train Station remains a crucial transportation hub. It serves five of the seven active routes in the national railway network. It’s a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the energy of the present. The station’s platforms bustle with activity. Travelers embark on journeys to destinations across Vietnam. Hanoi Train Station is more than just a station. It’s a symbol of Hanoi’s resilience. It is a reminder of the city’s rich history. It offers a unique glimpse into the past and the present of Vietnam.
