Hanoi’s story begins long before it was called Hanoi. Around the third century BC a citadel was built here. It was known as Cổ Loa. Cổ Loa was the first political center of Vietnamese civilization.

From 1902 to 1945 Hanoi was the capital of French Indochina. The French left their mark on the city’s architecture. You can still see French colonial buildings today. This includes tree-lined boulevards and grand villas.

After the August Revolution Hanoi became the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This was a newly independent country. The city then played a pivotal role in the Vietnam War. It became a symbol of Vietnamese resilience.

In 1976 North and South Vietnam reunified. Hanoi became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In 2008 Hà Tây Province was annexed into Hanoi. This almost tripled Hanoi’s area.

Today Hanoi is the cultural economic and educational center of Northern Vietnam. Hanoi attracted 18.7 million visitors in 2022. The Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city also has the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoàn Kiếm Lake.
