Hannover-Land I was created for the 1980 federal election. It included parts of abolished constituencies. These were Hannover III, Schaumburg, Celle, and Gifhorn. From 1980 through 1998, it was number 38. In 2002 and 2005, it was number 43. It became number 44 in 2009. Since 2013, it has been number 43 again.
Originally, Hannover-Land I included Burgdorf. Burgwedel and Garbsen were also included. Isernhagen and Langenhagen were as well. Neustadt am Rübenberge, Wedemark, and Lehrte were also part. And Uetze from the former Landkreis Hannover district. In 2002, Lehrte and Uetze were lost. Wunstorf was gained.
Many notable figures have represented Hannover-Land I. Gerhard Schröder of the SPD served from 1980 to 1983. He later became Chancellor of Germany. Dietmar Kansy of the CDU was elected in 1983. He served until 1998. Monika Ganseforth of the SPD won in 1998. She served one term. Caren Marks, also SPD, succeeded her in 2002. In 2013, Hendrik Hoppenstedt of the CDU was elected. Rebecca Schamber regained the constituency for the SPD in 2021.
In the 2021 election, Rebecca Schamber won with 33.7% of the vote. Hendrik Hoppenstedt of the CDU received 31.9%. Jens Palandt of the Greens got 13.0%. Dietmar Friedhoff of the AfD secured 7.5%. Grigorios Aggelidis of the FDP got 7.3%.
The 2017 election saw Hendrik Hoppenstedt of the CDU win. He gained 40.1% of the vote. Caren Marks of the SPD followed with 33.1%. Dietmar Friedhoff of the AfD received 9.6%. Eike Lengemann of the Greens got 6.0%. Grigorios Aggelidis of the FDP secured 5.2%.
In 2013, Hendrik Hoppenstedt of the CDU won again. He had 44.3% of the vote. Caren Marks of the SPD got 38.5%. Wolf von Nordheim of the Greens received 5.0%. Diether Dehm of the Left got 3.6%. Hans-Peter Wendt of the AfD secured 3.1%.
The 2009 election saw Caren Marks of the SPD win. She gained 38.7% of the vote. Sebastian Lechner of the CDU followed with 38.2%. Thomas Iseke of the FDP got 8.4%. Detlef Knauer of the Greens received 6.7%. Brigitta Runge of the Left secured 6.4%.
