Hanne-Sobek-Sportanlage Plaque

Was it a twist of fate that brought Johannes “Hanne” Sobek to Berlin? Here at the Hanne-Sobek-Sportanlage, we celebrate this Berlin football legend. The plaque beside us commemorates a man whose name is synonymous with Hertha BSC’s golden age. Sobek arrived in Berlin as a child. He started his football journey with Alemannia 90 before joining Hertha BSC. He quickly became a beloved figure in the Berlin football scene. Between 1926 and 1931, Sobek captained Hertha BSC in six consecutive German Championship finals. They won the coveted title twice. Imagine the thrill of those victories in 1930 and 1931. The Hanne-Sobek-Sportanlage, formerly known as Sportring Wedding, was renamed in his honor in 1999. The bronze plaque, unveiled by the district mayor and Sobek’s son, serves as a permanent reminder of his legacy. Sobek wasn’t just a footballer. He was a personality. He starred in a silent film, worked with a famous artist, and even authored a sports novel. He was friends with renowned figures like actor Hans Albers and boxer Max Schmeling.
