Across the Han River stands Hannam Bridge a vital artery of Seoul. Construction began January 19 1966. It wasn’t just any bridge. Hannam Bridge was built to speed up the evacuation of Seoul. A potential North Korean attack loomed large.

Before 1985 it was known as Hangang Bridge No 3. This name inspired a popular trot song Jesamhanganggyo. The bridge connects Sinsa-dong and Hannam-dong. These are busy business districts. The traffic is always congested.

Hyundai Engineering & Construction built Hannam Bridge. Construction finished December 25 1969. The project cost 1113000000 won. In 2007 daily traffic reached 216980 vehicles. The bridge is part of the Asian Highway Network AH1.
