Beneath the vibrant Vietnamese sky stands Hanh Thong Tay Church. A unique whisper of Byzantium in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. This architectural gem, nestled within Go Vap District, isn’t your typical Vietnamese church. Forget Gothic or Romanesque. Hanh Thong Tay Church draws its inspiration from the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy. Its Byzantine style sets it apart, a testament to a unique blend of cultures and histories. Construction began in 1921, funded by a man named Denis Le Phat An, a wealthy landowner and the uncle of Queen Nam Phuong. He gifted the land and shouldered the cost, driven by faith and a desire to create something extraordinary. The church’s journey wasn’t without its bumps. The original French contractor, Baader, made significant technical errors. Le Phat An, a meticulous observer, noticed these flaws and dismissed Baader. He then hired Lamorte to complete the church, ensuring his vision was realized. Hanh Thong Tay Church stands as a testament to his dedication. The church’s design echoes its Italian inspiration. Italian bricks were used throughout the interior, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Italian sanctuary. A hemispherical semi-dome above the apse features a poignant painting of Christ on the Cross. The 20m high dome above the crossing holds images of Christ’s disciples. The high altar, carved from white marble, is a masterpiece of floral engraving. Hanh Thong Tay Church holds more than just religious significance. It’s also the final resting place of Le Phat An and his wife, Anna Tran Thi Tho. Their elaborate tombs, located in the east and west transepts, depict the couple kneeling in prayer, forever bound in their faith and love. The church originally boasted a 30m steeple. However, in 1953, it was shortened to 19.5m at the request of Indochina Airlines. This was a necessary compromise for aviation safety. Despite this alteration, and even damage sustained during the 1968 Tet Offensive, Hanh Thong Tay Church endures. It stands as a symbol of enduring faith, a unique architectural treasure, and a poignant reminder of the individuals whose vision and dedication brought it to life.
