In 1787, a simple dwelling rose near the Kuhtor, a gate within Potsdam’s sprawling park of Sanssouci. This unassuming structure would later transform into the Handtmannsche Meierei am Kuhtor. It became a charming example of Italianate architecture. The Handtmannsche Meierei initially served as the home for the royal gardener, Wilhelm Sello, replacing a burnt-down windmill that once stood on the site. Years passed. The property saw further development in 1834 under the direction of Ludwig Persius, a student of the renowned architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Persius, known for his work on the Roman Baths and the Pheasantry in Sanssouci, reshaped the Handtmannsche Meierei with distinct Italianate features. He added two lower annexes, a helper’s house to the east and a stable to the west. He also added a pergola, a shaded walkway adorned with climbing plants, extending gracefully westward. The Handtmannsche Meierei is a testament to Persius’ skill in blending architecture with nature. His design echoed the Italian Renaissance style. He drew inspiration from the picturesque Villa Cenci in Rome’s Villa Borghese gardens. The main building’s three-story structure contrasts beautifully with the lower annexes. This creates a visually captivating ensemble that complements its park setting. The Handtmannsche Meierei am Kuhtor stood as a testament to evolving architectural tastes and the changing needs of its occupants. Over the years, modifications were made to the structure. Windows were added to bring more light into newly created living spaces. The roof, originally covered with Roman tiles, was later replaced with more readily available and affordable slate. Despite these alterations, the essence of Persius’s Italianate vision remains. The Handtmannsche Meierei, after a period of vacancy and much-needed restoration, continues to grace the landscape of Sanssouci Park. It offers a glimpse into the architectural heritage and the stories of those who once called this charming place home.
