After his passing in 1985, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners purchased the house and the collection of more than 250 artworks that Dr. Hammonds had amassed over a lifetime. His vision lived on through his collection. He was a true champion of African American artists. He supported emerging artists and art groups, and he served on several important boards. The Hammonds House Museum showcases the incredible talent and diverse styles of artists of African descent. Among the highlights are 18 works by the master artist Romare Bearden. There’s an even older piece—the first known painting by acclaimed landscape artist Robert S.
