How about we step back in time to explore the story of Hammond House? It stands as a testament to architectural vision. Hammond House is one of two buildings designed by architects for New Hall. New Hall is now Murray Edwards College.
Its twin, Clover House, sits just to the north. Clover House is also known as 69A Storey’s Way. Hammond House is the larger of the two. It provides accommodation for 12 students. The other house, Clover House, has only six student rooms. Its single-story design responds to the upward slope of the site.
These houses reside on the eastern edge of the garden. This garden belongs to the older 69 Storey’s Way. If you look closely, you will see this side of Hammond House forms part of a circle. There was a plan to build three more houses. These houses would continue the circle. Two houses for Fellows would have been added at the corners. The plan would have beautifully framed the garden. Unfortunately, like many grand designs, it never came to fruition.
Cambridge Design acted as the supervising architects for the build. They ensured the project aligned with the college’s vision. They oversaw every detail. Hammond House stands as a reminder of what could have been. It also represents innovative design.
As we admire Hammond House, let’s consider its modern context too. RJH Hammond Properties Ltd shows Mr Robert James Hammond as a person with significant control.
