In 1968, a pivotal moment reshaped the Church of God in Christ, forever impacting institutions like the Hammond Church of God in Christ here in Detroit. A new constitution was adopted, dissolving the office of Senior Bishop and establishing the General Assembly as the supreme authority. This assembly would elect a presiding bishop and a general board of twelve bishops. The presiding bishop leads the church, supported by two appointed assistant presiding bishops. The Hammond Church of God in Christ, along with other COGIC churches, operates under this structure. The general board makes executive decisions, holding meetings three times a year. The current presiding bishop, J. Drew Sheard, leads from Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church Of God In Christ, also here in Detroit. The Church of God in Christ has expanded significantly since its tumultuous beginnings in 1897. It now boasts a global presence, with millions of members and thousands of churches worldwide. The church’s international headquarters resides in Memphis, Tennessee, a testament to its growth and influence. This structure, established in 1968, ensures the Hammond Church of God in Christ remains connected to a vibrant, global community of believers.
