From a king’s stronghold to a modern marvel, Hammershus Besøgscenter’s story unfolds before us. Hammershus Besøgscenter opened its doors in March 2018, a testament to time intertwining with progress. Nestled about 200 meters east of the majestic Hammershus, the center offers a fresh perspective on the medieval fortress. A deep ravine separates the two, yet the visual connection is undeniable. Hammershus Besøgscenter’s large windows frame the panoramic view, showcasing the ruins in all their glory. Hammershus itself has a rich history. The name, originating in the 13th century as “castrum Hamar” and evolving into “Hamershus” by 1394, echoes the landscape. “Hammer” refers to the rocky, cliff-laden terrain, while “hus” signifies a fortified structure. This strategic placement near Skåne and the powerful archbishopric of Lund placed Hammershus at the heart of power struggles. Control of trade and navigation in the Baltic Sea was the prize. Built on a 74-meter-high cliff, the fortress was a daunting obstacle from the sea, yet visible from afar. Hammershus Besøgscenter builds upon this legacy, offering guided tours in collaboration with the Bornholms Middelaldercenter throughout the season. The center complements, rather than competes with, the historical site. From its vantage point, visitors can appreciate the scale and grandeur of Hammershus, while learning about its historical significance. The center also offers amenities, housing the Brohuset shop and cafe. Here, you can find refreshments and locally inspired dishes. Hammershus Besøgscenter connects the past with the present. It’s a place to contemplate history, appreciate nature, and enjoy modern comforts.
