“Where is the man who always needs Dr. August König’s Hamburg Drops?” This is a question once posed by an old advertisement. It was for Hamburger Tropfen, a patent medicine by Dr. August König.

Here we stand before a piece of Hamburg’s intriguing past. It is linked to a medicinal concoction known as Hamburger Tropfen. This product was once advertised as a cure-all. It was touted as a blood purifier. It promised to restore strength and health. It was even marketed as a remedy for stomach, liver, and kidney issues.

The story of Hamburger Tropfen takes us across the Atlantic to America. The advertisement “Das Picnic” promoted Hamburger Tropfen. It was created by an American company in New Castle, Wisconsin. The ad featured a picture puzzle. People had to find the man who needed Dr. August König’s Hamburg Drops.

Intriguingly, the landscape in the advertisement was anthropomorphic. It resembled a man’s head and upper torso. This was inspired by the Dutch painter Joos de Momper. He was known for his anthropomorphic landscapes in the 18th century.

But the tale of Hamburger Tropfen doesn’t end there. A man named John Carl Mitau enters the story. He was a German immigrant in Calistoga, California. Mitau manufactured the popular Hamburger Tropfen Bitters. He brought it to California. Wm. Hoelscher & Co. from San Francisco acted as the agent for the brand.

These Hamburger Tropfen Bitters were sold from 1884 to 1906. Wm. Hoelscher & Co. trademarked the brand in 1900. The first bottles had labels only. Later bottles were embossed in the late 1890s. The embossed bottles are now extremely rare. Only a handful are known to exist in either aqua or amethyst glass. The embossing on the bottle reads “Hamburger Lebens Tropfen”. This translates to “Hamburg Life Drops”.

The story of Hamburger Tropfen reminds us of a time when patent medicines were common. They promised miraculous cures. Whether it truly lived up to its claims, Hamburger Tropfen remains a fascinating piece of Hamburg’s history. It connects the city to global trade and the marketing of health products. It reminds us of a time when a simple bottle could promise a better life.
