Hidden within Berlin’s Reinickendorf district, Hallen am Borsigturm stands as a testament to transformation. Where towering machinery once forged the heart of German industry, now shoppers stroll beneath the steel skeletons of a bygone era. Hallen am Borsigturm opened its doors in 1999, breathing new life into the historic Borsig factory site. The area’s industrial legacy began in 1837 when August Borsig established his engineering works. This factory fueled the growth of the Prussian railway, connecting Berlin to Potsdam. Hallen am Borsigturm, with its 50,000 square meters of space, now houses 115 shops. This shopping center honors its past. The Borsig company, under the leadership of Albert Borsig, expanded significantly in the late 19th century. To accommodate its growing workforce, the company constructed housing for both workers and management. This led to the creation of the Borsigwalde worker’s colony. The iconic Borsigturm, Berlin’s first skyscraper, was erected from 1922 to 1924. This tower served as the administrative center of the Borsig company. Today, visiting Hallen am Borsigturm is a journey through time. The steel frameworks of the old factory halls still reach skyward. A modern roof membrane acts as a second skin, connecting the old and the new. Inside, the shopping area spans five former factory halls. A central “shopping street” guides visitors through the complex. Here, amidst the echoes of industry, a vibrant marketplace thrives. Hallen am Borsigturm remembers its roots. It celebrates the ingenuity that once propelled German industry.
