“A gift, you say?” a passerby might have uttered, eyebrows raised in surprise. Right here, before the grand facade of Victoria Hall, such a question wouldn’t be out of place. This magnificent concert venue, built between 1891 and 1894, wasn’t originally intended as a Genevan masterpiece. It was a gift, a gesture of grand appreciation from a British consul named Daniel Fitzgerald Packenham Barton. He dedicated it to Queen Victoria, hence the name Victoria Hall. Barton’s generosity didn’t stop there. In 1901, he gifted the hall to the City of Geneva. Imagine the celebrations, the speeches filled with gratitude, the music echoing through the streets as the city embraced this incredible gift. Victoria Hall quickly became a cultural heart of Geneva. Before the renowned Orchestre de la Suisse Romande made it their home in 1918, a wind band called the Harmonie nautique filled its halls with music. Sadly, tragedy struck in 1984. A fire, ignited by an act of arson, swept through the hall. Artwork, including paintings by Ernest Biéler, were consumed by the flames, along with the original pipe organ. The loss was immeasurable. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, Victoria Hall rose again. Painstakingly restored, it boasts a new, equally impressive organ installed in 1993. Today, standing as a testament to both generosity and resilience, Victoria Hall continues to enchant audiences with its beauty and the power of music.
