Constructed between 1406 and 1420, Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty initiated this sacred site. He also built the Forbidden City. Later, the Jiajing Emperor extended the complex in the 16th century and renamed it Temple of Heaven.

Picture the emperors in special robes. They abstained from eating meat. No ordinary Chinese citizen could witness the procession or ceremony. Here at the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Emperor would personally pray. He sought heaven’s favor for good harvests. Any mistake during the ceremony was seen as a bad omen. It could bring misfortune to the nation.

The hall rests on a three-tiered marble stone base. Notice that the building is entirely wooden. It was constructed without using a single nail. Lightning struck and burned the original hall down in 1889. It was rebuilt a few years later.
