Did you ever imagine a playground named “Half-Nelson”? Right here in front of us is Half-Nelson Playground. It’s nestled between Nelson Avenue and West 174th Street. It’s not named for the wrestling hold, but for its location halfway down the block on Nelson Avenue. Half-Nelson Playground is more than just swings and slides. It’s a testament to the power of community advocacy. For years, residents, led by Kathryn Speller, fought for a safe and fun place for kids in this neighborhood. Their dream was realized in 2009.
Half-Nelson Playground’s $1.7 million renovation wasn’t just a facelift. It was a transformation. The playground now boasts a brand new play area. There’s a refreshing spray shower for hot summer days. A basketball court provides space for older kids. New landscaping and seating areas offer a welcoming environment for families. The park even has optical illusion play equipment, adding a touch of whimsy and fun.
This project wasn’t just about adding amenities. It was about addressing community needs. Before the renovation, younger children often played on the basketball court, creating a potentially unsafe situation. The renovated Half-Nelson Playground now offers dedicated spaces for children of all ages.
Councilwoman Helen Diane Foster championed this project. She secured $1.7 million in funding, along with an additional $286,000 in mayoral funds. This investment demonstrates the city’s commitment to providing quality recreational spaces. The dedication ceremony in 2009 was a celebration of community spirit and perseverance. The P.S. 204 chorus and Lydia Petrides performed, adding to the festive atmosphere. NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe praised the community’s efforts and the importance of the playground.
Even the park’s drainage system received an upgrade. A new accessible drinking fountain was installed. Stonewall terraces were added to the hillside to prevent erosion. These details highlight the thoroughness of the renovation. Community Board 5 District Manager Xavier Rodriquez urged everyone to keep the park clean and safe. He emphasized the importance of community ownership in maintaining this valuable resource. Half-Nelson Playground is a symbol of what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision. It’s a place where children can play, families can connect, and the community can thrive.
