Smallest after Hansaviertel. That’s how Halensee ranks among Berlin’s localities. This area covers just 1.27 square kilometers. It’s a fascinating place with a unique history.

Halensee emerged around 1880. It started as a villa and tenement settlement. Back then, it was part of Wilmersdorf. Wilmersdorf became part of Greater Berlin in 1920.

In 2004, Halensee gained its own identity. It became an Ortsteil or locality. Halensee is named after the small Halensee lake. Oddly, the lake itself belongs to the neighboring Grunewald locality.

Halensee’s boundaries are well-defined. The Stadtring highway forms its western border. Cicerostrasse marks the eastern edge. This street branches off from the famous Kurfürstendamm.

Today, about 15,700 people call Halensee home. That’s according to 2022 statistics. Interestingly, it has more residents than Grunewald. Only 11,229 people live in the larger Grunewald district.

Halensee offers easy access to transportation. The Berlin-Halensee station connects it to the city. The Berlin S-Bahn serves this station. Lines S4 and S46 run here. Also Berlin-Hohenzollerndamm station is nearby.

Halensee even has its own primary school. It is called Halensee-Grundschule. The Japanische Ergänzungsschule in Berlin uses this school. It is a weekend Japanese supplementary school.

In 1921, Halensee hosted the German shooting championship. A man named Jannich won. He used an Ortgies semi-automatic pistol.

Halensee borders several other localities. These include Charlottenburg, Wilmersdorf and Schmargendorf. Grunewald and Westend are also neighbors.

Rathenauplatz belongs to Halensee. But the Schaubühne theatre does not. Hochmeisterplatz and Henriettenplatz are part of Halensee. So are Westfälische Strasse and Cicerostrasse. Streets named after Brandenburg electors also belong here.

Halensee is a small but vibrant part of Berlin. It has a rich history and a distinct character. Take a stroll through its streets. Discover the charm of this unique neighborhood.
